No boat. No chair. Everything on your back and miles of beach in front of you — chasing bait, birds and current until something eats. Four oceans, six months, and one question: what actually earns its place in the bag?
Every item is a weight decision. If it doesn't justify being on your back after six miles of soft sand, it doesn't go in the bag — and it doesn't get a good review here.
Bait, birds, current, structure. The water tells you where to start and how long to stay — and so does someone who has fished it for thirty years. Local knowledge weighs nothing. Take all of it you can get.
From the sand there's nowhere to follow a fish. Drag settings, leader choice and landing plans all get decided before the cast, not during the run.
Sand beaches, estuaries, cuts and rock piles on the southern cape. Roosters, jacks and whatever the cooling water pushes in.
Reef edge and shoreline on foot, fished with village permission. Trevally country, and the hardest drag test in the sport.
Andaman beaches, mangrove edges and estuary mouths. Humidity, heat and tackle that has to survive both.
Atoll flats and skinny water, walked. Where every gram in the bag has already been argued about three times.
There is no definitive kit yet. That's the point. Four oceans and six months to earn one, a mile at a time.
