Provided gear is assessed on exactly the same five criteria as gear bought outright, and negative results are published. Nothing is written in exchange for a favourable review, and no manufacturer is given approval over, or advance sight of, what is published about their product.
US Federal Trade Commission rules require material connections between a reviewer and a brand to be disclosed. We think that's the floor rather than the ceiling: the reason to read a gear review is that the person writing it has something to lose by getting it wrong.
